CBD pre-rolls, also known as CBD joints or hemp joints, are a popular way to enjoy CBD. These pre-rolls include hemp flower encased in rolling paper. Because they look like cannabis joints and are smoked the way you’d smoke a cannabis joint, many people ask: what’s the difference between a CBD pre-roll and a cannabis joint?
The key difference is that CBD pre-rolls are made with hemp while cannabis joints are made with cannabis.
Here’s what that means.
The first thing you might associate with a cannabis joint is getting “high,” or intoxicated. This is where a CBD pre-roll differs from a cannabis joint.
Cannabis and hemp are literally the same species of plant. However, we use “cannabis” to refer to the plant that makes you feel intoxicated, while we use “hemp” to refer to the stuff that doesn’t make you feel intoxicated.
It all comes down to a chemical called THC. THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical in cannabis that makes you feel “high.” Legally speaking, cannabis contains over 0.3 percent THC, while hemp is classified as anything containing 0.3 percent THC or less.
So, because hemp contains less THC than what cannabis does, a CBD pre-roll will not make you feel intoxicated.
The purpose of a hemp pre-roll is to deliver CBD into the body, so it’s usually made with hemp that is high in CBD. Our pre-rolls, for example, are between 16 and 17 percent CBD.
Cannabis joints, on the other hand, are not always high in CBD.
CBD doesn’t get you high, but it has a range of reported health benefits. People use CBD pre-rolls to address issues like:
Many people also use CBD pre-rolls for pure enjoyment, relaxation, and social smoking.

When the Farm Bill of 2018 was signed, the production of hemp became federally legal in the United States for the first time in about 60 years. It also made it legal to make, buy, and sell hemp products, including CBD joints and hemp-derived CBD oils.
Cannabis, however, is not legal at a federal level. In some states, cannabis is legal for medical use only; in others, it’s legal for both medical and recreational use; in other states, it’s still totally illegal.
While enjoying a CBD joint, you can rest assured that you’re not breaking the law.
