Know the Difference: Why Hemp Seed Oil is Not the Same as CBD Oil

December 10, 2020

Many people mistakenly think that CBD oil and hemp seed oil are the same thing. Because of this, many people purchase hemp seed oil expecting to get the benefits of CBD oil—and, naturally, they end up disappointed!

While hemp plants do contain CBD, the majority of the CBD is found in the buds (that is, the flower) of the plant. Although they may contain a tiny trace of CBD, hemp seeds don’t contain nearly enough to actually affect your body.

Are there any benefits of hemp seed oil?

If hemp seed oil does not contain CBD, why is it found in so many health shops?

Despite the fact that it doesn’t contain CBD, hemp oil seems to have a few benefits. It’s rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, gamma-linolenic acid, B vitamins, and vitamin D. People use it to benefit their skin, gut, brain, and heart health.

Hemp was recently made federally legal by the Farm Bill of 2018 - the same bill that has made CBD legal throughout the US. Because of this, hemp production has increased, which is why it’s much easier to find hemp in health stores.

Some CBD oils contain hemp seed oil

Although hemp seed oil doesn’t necessarily contain CBD, some CBD products do contain hemp seed oil. So, if you see “hemp seed oil” as a listed ingredient in your favorite CBD oil, don’t panic!

CBD oils consist of CBD molecules plus a carrier oil. Our fantastic CBD oils (which you can purchased here) use coconut oil as a carrier oil, but you can also find CBD oils that contain olive oil, grapeseed oil, and cranberry oil. Some CBD oils use hemp seed oil as a carrier.

Each carrier oil has its own benefits, and it’s up to you to decide which CBD product you prefer. For the most part, carrier oil doesn’t make a big difference when it comes to the effects of CBD oil. Most CBD users don’t really have a preference for a specific carrier oil.

Of course, if you have any allergies, it’s important to read the ingredients label carefully and stay away from oils and flavorings that might harm you.

Telling the difference between CBD oil and hemp seed oil

It’s important to read the packaging carefully before purchasing a CBD oil. If it doesn’t say CBD or cannabidiol on the packaging, it doesn’t contain CBD.

It’s important to read the lab report before purchasing CBD oil. A lab report, also known as a certificate of analysis or COA, will verify whether something actually contains CBD or not. It should also tell you how much CBD the product contains.

These reports are usually found on the company’s website. It’s not a good idea to purchase CBD oil that does not have a lab report or COA because you can’t be totally sure what it contains. If you want to check out our COAs, you can read them here.
