Is your CBD oil safe? Many factors determine the quality and safety of your CBD oil. One of these factors is the extraction method. The “extraction method” is the way CBD is removed from the plant in order to make the CBD product.
There are four main ways to extract CBD:
Each method has its own benefits and drawbacks, but generally speaking, CO2 extraction is considered the best method. While CO2 extraction can be expensive, it’s safe, effective, and efficient. Here at Eve Farms, our CBD is extracted using the CO2 method.
Here’s what you need to know about each process.
Hydrocarbon solvent extraction involves using a solvent like petroleum, butane, or propane to separate CBD from hemp.
This method is cheap and efficient, and the concentration should be high because less CBD is lost during the process. But unfortunately, this extraction method can be a little dangerous because toxic residue can remain in the CBD.
This method is cheap, efficient, and safe. CBD extracted using a natural solvent should not contain any toxic residue. This natural solvent could be something like ethanol. Once the ethanol evaporates, CBD oil is left behind, which can then be used to create CBD products.
However, there are some drawbacks to natural solvent extraction. When CBD is extracted through this method, there tends to be a lower concentration of CBD because so much is “lost” during the extraction process.
Steam distillation is pretty self-explanatory. It involves using steam to separate the CBD oils from the rest of the plant. This method has been successfully used for centuries.
While it’s inexpensive and doesn’t lead to any toxic residues forming in the CBD, it’s a bit risky because the steam could burn the CBD, rendering it useless. Another disadvantage of steam distillation is that it’s not very effective at extracting CBD; you need a lot of hemp to produce very little CBD.
CO2 extraction involves using supercritical carbon dioxide to separate CBD from the rest of the plant. “Supercritical” means it’s both in gas and liquid form. Supercritical CO2 is basically used as a solvent that removes the CBD from the hemp.
This method has pretty much all the advantages of the above methods. With CO2 extraction, CBD products will contain no toxic residue. It can’t burn the CBD, either. What’s more is that it’s the most effective at extracting the CO2 from hemp: a relatively small amount of hemp is needed to produce a lot of CBD.
The one main drawback of CO2 extraction is the cost: it’s more expensive than other extraction methods. However, when you consider how safe and effective this method is, the cost is arguably worth it.
The extraction method should be listed on the website, or even on the packaging. If you can’t find the extraction method from the packaging or website, you can get in contact with the company or manufacturer to ask how it has been extracted.
To summarize, CO2 extraction is one of the best extraction methods for CBD. Although it’s more expensive than, say, solvent extraction, it’s far safer than most methods and it produces top-quality CBD.
If you’re purchasing CO2-extracted CBD, you can rest assured that this extraction method is safe and effective.
CBD is considered safe to consume, but some companies have sadly made low-quality - and sometimes dangerous - products. Beyond opting for CO2-extracted CBD, there are a few things you should do to ensure that your CBD is safe and high quality - like our CBD products.
Before making a purchase, read the lab report. The lab report (also known as the certificate of analysis or COA) verifies how much CBD is in your product. It also checks for toxins like molds, pesticides, and heavy metals. If you want to check out our COAs, you can find them here.
It’s also a good idea to check out how reputable the company is. A quick Google search can help you figure out whether a CBD company has been in hot water or is facing any legal battles.
Lastly, we recommend you speak to your doctor. A CBD-friendly doctor should be able to advise you on how to use CBD. If you have a chronic condition or use chronic medication, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before using CBD. While CBD is safe to consume, it can interact with certain medications.
