Do CBD pre-rolls smell like cannabis?

Do CBD pre-rolls smell like cannabis?

October 19, 2020

Cannabis has an unmistakable, herbaceous scent. Some people love this aroma, while others hate it. Many people opt for CBD pre-rolls over cannabis joints because they will not make you feel intoxicated—but do CBD pre-rolls smell like cannabis?

In short, yes. CBD pre-rolls are made of high-CBD hemp flower, not cannabis flower. But when smoked, hemp and cannabis smell alike.

What’s the difference between hemp and cannabis?

Few people know this, but hemp and cannabis are technically the same species of plant.

The difference between the two is based on their levels of THC. THC is a chemical found in both hemp and cannabis plants. It’s the chemical in cannabis that makes you feel intoxicated if you smoke or ingest it.

Hemp is low in THC, while cannabis is higher in THC. In fact, hemp is legally defined as any plant that contains 0.3 percent or less THC; anything more than that is legally classed as cannabis and therefore not federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill

So, the difference between hemp and cannabis is how much THC is in the plant.

What gives cannabis its aroma?

Cannabis’s unique scent is because of a combination of its plant matter and terpenes.

If you pay close attention to different cannabis and hemp strains, you might notice that some smell like citrus while others smell like blueberries, peppercorns, or flowers. Growers actually breed different strains so that they smell and taste different.

Their fragrance all comes down to the terpenes in the strain. Every strain of hemp and cannabis has its own terpene profile. Terpenes are natural chemicals that produce fragrances (and sometimes flavors).

Both hemp and cannabis contain terpenes. Terpenes are also found in various trees, flowers, and fruits, and are used in the manufacturing of essential oils, cosmetics, and household cleaning items. Terpenes give lavender, pine needles, and citrus fruits their iconic scents.

According to a 2018 review in the European Journal of Medical Chemistry, terpenes seem to have various health benefits, although they need to be studied better before we fully understand their potential.

Our CBD pre-rolls consist of three different cultivars of hemp: Vibes, Boost, and Balance. Each cultivar has its own terpene profile, aroma, and taste. Experiment with our different cultivars or try our variety bundle.

Will my CBD pre-roll smell like cannabis when I smoke it?

In short, Yes.

This is because the fragrance of hemp and cannabis is not determined by the THC levels, but by the terpene profile and the plant matter. While different strains might each have their own unique fragrance, they mostly all smell like cannabis.

Our CBD pre-rolls come in glass tubes fitted with a cork. This prevents the smell from filling your cupboard or drawer. The glass tubes have the added benefit of keeping your pre-rolls fresh, and therefore potent, for longer.

If the smell of cannabis is off-putting to you, try to smoke in an open and well-ventilated area. If you’re really not keen on the smell, but would like to use CBD, try our range of tinctures which are taken orally.
